Frequently asked questions

What is a Nutritional Therapist?

Nutritional Therapists consider clients to be unique and recommend personalised nutrition and lifestyle actions rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach. A Nutritional Therapist seeks the prevention of ill health, but aims to go beyond that to the promotion of optimal health.

Personalised nutrition is tailored specifically for you, considering your health journey, your health goals, and dietary preferences.

A Nutritional Therapist will have trained for 3-4 years and be accredited by a national professional standards body. In my case that is the Nutritional Therapists of Ireland (NTOI).

Who are your consultations for?

If you have health issues or goals that you need help with, or you would like support in improving your diet or health status, my consultations are for you. Personalised nutrition consultations are relevant for individuals with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis; anyone with persistent digestive issues or those wishing to support an autoimmune condition, as well as those looking to enhance their health and wellbeing. Recommendations are not a replacement for medical advice; practitioners frequently work alongside medical professionals to support individuals’ wellbeing. Most clients that come to see me are women, but I also work with men.

What is a consultation?

Consultations involve longer initial appointments, or shorter follow up sessions. We meet either via zoom or in my Co Derry clinic to discuss your health concerns, goals and the steps that you need to take to work towards better health. The first consultation involves a very in-depth health assessment that will cover your family health history and your health from birth through to the present day. Follow up sessions enable us to review your progress and agree further gradual changes to your diet and lifestyle.

How long are the consultations?

Your first full session (an initial consultation) will take 90 minutes. This is much longer than you would typically spend with a doctor because we look at all aspects of your health. Follow up consultations take 30 - 45 minutes.

What is the difference between your consultations and your programmes?

The programmes are for groups of people rather than individual. My programmes are mostly small group, 10-12 people at most and follow a nutritional therapy approach, looking at the root causes and whole-body solutions. They are usually delivered over 4-6 weeks. My signature programmes currently are ‘Nutrition for a Happy and Healthy Weight Loss’ and ‘Eat Well to Live Well and Longer’.

Are your programmes suitable for vegetarians or vegans?

My programme work will offer a more generic dietary regime; however, it can be tailored to suit a vegetarian lifestyle. If you are a well-established vegan you should have no difficulty following my programme guidelines to tailor your diet, however if you are an inexperienced vegan then one of my one to one packages would be more appropriate to build your confidence.

Do I get a meal plan?

With my programmes such as Nutrition for a Happy and Healthy Weight Loss meal plans are included.

If you book any of the packages, meal plans will be included as part of your recommendations if required but this is based on individual need and preference.

If you book a Power Hour, a meal plan is not included.

Do you offer in person consultations as well as Zoom?

Yes, my in-person clinic is in Claudy in Co Derry. Clinic days are Wednesday and Thursday, Evening appointments are available but limited. I also offer telephone or Skype appointments.

Groups don’t suit me. Can you help me lose weight One to One?

Yes. For weight loss clients you have the option of the small group (12) Nutrition for a Happy and Healthy Weight Loss 8-week programme, or booking a 6 week One to One package, which can then be extended as necessary.

How many consultations will I need?

The number of consultations required depends on your individual health issues. My aim is to achieve long-term results for you as quickly as possible. However, on average clients require a minimum of three consultations over a 6-week period. For best results, my Premium Package of 10 consultations is recommended.

Do you recommend supplements?

I advocate a food first approach. However, if this is not possible, or if results can be achieved faster, I may recommend supplements.

Do you offer home visits?

Depending on where you live and circumstances, home visits can be arranged. However, there may be an additional fee to cover travel expenses.

What’s your cancellation policy?

Packages are paid for in advance and normally appointments scheduled well in advance. However, I know that unexpected things happen, and that sometimes appointments need to be cancelled and rescheduled. However, I ask that you give me 48 hours’ notice.

Do you recommend testing?

Often, I can identify factors that are contributing to your symptoms by taking a detailed case history. However, in some circumstances testing may be recommended so that I can develop a more targeted protocol to get to the root of the problem.
